All too often, kids are blamed for the traffic crashes in which they are involved. They are labeled
careless or lacking in caution. To the contrary, young children act in a manner determined
by their age and degree of development. It is essential to understand the developmental
characteristics that influence a child’s behavior as a bicyclist.
• Have a narrower field of vision than adults, about one-third less.
• Cannot easily judge a car’s speed and distance.
• Assume that if they can see a car, its driver must be able to see them. However, children
are easily hidden from view by parked cars and other objects.
• Cannot readily tell the direction a sound is coming from.
• May be impatient and impulsive.
• Concentrate on only one thing at a time. This is likely not to be traffic.
• Have a limited sense of danger.
• Often mix fantasy with reality.
• Imitate the (often bad) behavior of others, especially older children and adults.
• Are concrete (versus abstract) thinkers and do not extrapolate well from one situation
Children between the ages of ten and fourteen have the highest rate of bicycle crashes.
A SOUP SUPPER: will be held tomorrow from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Brooks Community Hall to help Cody Gagner fund his way to Down Under Sports in Australia for Track and Field Events this summer. A silent auction and quilt raffle will also be held.

CONSERVATION CORPS MN SUMMER YOUTH CORPS: Every summer they hire around 150 high school aged youth (15-18) for a month to do natural resource work across the state. It is a paid job for the youth and a fantastic opportunity for them to learn work skills, meet others from across the state, and see the power and value of their work. Information on it is available on the counter in the office. Online application deadline to apply is April 17, 2014. There are two sessions held and you can work one of the sessions.
